1 Peter 5:1-11

The Missing Ingredient

1. Addressing Christlike Leaders (vs. 1-4)

A. Peter's Roles and Identity

- Following a longer discussion of suffering

- fellow elder- not really higher but

- witness of the sufferings of Christ- let’s keep this in focus. This instruction is centered on Christ

- Partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed

1 Peter 1:3-5

B. Command to Leaders

V. 1 Starting with the top. We lead differently because of who leads us.

Mark 10:35-45

C. Shepherd the Flock

- Willingly as God would have you not just the bylaws or organization

- Shameful Gain ”In fondness for dishonest gain” “Greedily” Only time used in Greek New Testament

- Not Domineering (same Greek word as used in the passage from Mark 10 to describe how the Gentiles Lord their authority.

- There is a reward

John 10:10-11, 14-15

2. Command to the Young (v. 5)

A. Be Subject to the Elders

“Why I Am not a Pacifist”- CS Lewis

“It may spring from the belief that human history is a simple, unilinear movement from worse to better- what is called a belief in Progress-so that any given generation is always in all respects wiser than all previous generations. To those who believe thus, our ancestors are superseded and there seems nothing improbable in the claim that the whole world was wrong until the day before yesterday and now has suddenly come right.” CS Lewis “The Weight of Glory”

B. Clothe Yourselves with Humility (All of You)

Giving Definition to Humility:

Matthew 11:29

Philippians 2:5-8

Luke 1:52

Romans 12:16

2 Corinthians 7:6

James 1:9-10

James 4:6-10

C. The Bottom Line

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”

3. Humble Yourselves! (vs. 6-11)

A. The Command again (v. 6)

B. Humility and Anxiety (v. 7)

Matthew 6:25-34

Psalm 94:19

Philippians 4:15-19

Psalm 38:18

Relationships make the difference

Proverbs 12:25

Prayer

Philippians 4:6

C. Humility and the Devil (vs. 8, 9)

D. The Eternal Promise (v. 10)

E. A Blessing: Who is in charge anyway? (v. 11)

”God’s sovereignty is the attribute by which He rules His entire creation, and to be sovereign God must be all-knowing, all powerful, and absolutely free.” AW Tozer

Reflection:

1. When you hear “radical humility” how would you describe or define it? When have you seen it?

2. What are barriers in your life to humbling yourself before the Lord?
