Psalm 124

That Was a Close One

1. The LORD on Our Side (vs. 1-5)

Joshua 5:13-15

A. If…

James 4:6

If It Had Not Been for the Lord
If it had not been for the Lord on our side
When strong raging floods surrounded us
We'd be surely crushed beneath the waves of sin
If it had not been for
If it had not been for the Lord
If it had not been for the Lord on our side
When dry desert plains had wearied us
But for grace we'd still be wandering in those lands
If it had not been for
If it had not been for the Lord
Our hope, our help, from age to age the same
Our God, our rock, most worthy to be praised
From this mount of grace
Our grateful hearts will say evermore
If it had not been for the Lord
If it had not been for the Lamb on that cross
Where love full and free reached down to us (reached to us)
There would be no peace with God, no peace with man
If it had not been for (if it had not been for)
If it had not been for the Lord
Our hope, our help, from age to age the same
Our God, our rock, most worthy to be praised
From this mount of grace
Our grateful hearts will say evermore
If it had not been for the Lord
If it had not been for the Lord on that day
Before heaven's throne what would we say
There with endless wonder we will shout, "Amen"
If it had not been for (if it had not been for)
If it had not been for the Lord (oh-oh)
Our hope, our help, from age to age the same
Our God, our rock, most worthy to be praised
From this mount of grace
Our grateful hearts will say evermore
If it had not been for the Lord (if it had not been for)
If it had not been for the Lord

This is one of the most difficult aspects of the LORD for us to accept these days. He is the creator. Much of the world around us believes differently.

Romans 8:31-39

“Who is the on the Lord’s Side?” - Francis Havergal

Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!
Not for weight of glory, nor for crown and palm,
Enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm;
But for love that claimeth lives for whom He died:
He whom Jesus saveth marches on His side.
By Thy love constraining, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!
Jesus, Thou hast bought us, not with gold or gem,
But with Thine own lifeblood, for Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling each who comes to Thee,
Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free.
By Thy grand redemption, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine!

Reflection:

When has the Lord acted in your life in such a way that if He had not, then life would be very different?

Follow UP in the Word through the Week…

Read: Joshua 5:13-16

What is Joshua’s first reaction to the Lord? What was his change in perspective and how can that help you?

Tuesday:

Read: James 4:6

Why is humility so important? How have you learned the lessons of allowing God to have first place in your life?

Read: 2 Timothy 2:22-26

When you read of the snare of the enemy, what ways does Satan attempt to trap you in life? How have you witnessed the Lord freeing you from those traps?

Thursday:

Read: Genesis 1

Why is creation so important to our understanding and belief of God? When you consider the traps in our culture today, how many begin with denying God His rightful place as Creator?

Friday:

Read: John 1

John begins with Creation. Who does he connect with being present at creation and what effect does that have on salvation?

Saturday:

Read: Romans 8:31-39

What is Paul’s point in writing this part of the letter to the Romans? What in your life today tries to separate you from the love of God?
