Psalm 8
A God Who Knows Who You Are
1. The NAME (vs. 1, 2)
A. LORD repeated
He is sovereign.
B. The Name’s importance
Ezekiel 36:20-21
C. Glory Above
D. Strength for even the most vulnerable
Practice of child sacrifice was around during this time. We read all about it in the Old Testament.
Micah 6:7-8
E. Victory
He still fights for you, and He has won the greatest battle of your life.
1 John 5:4-5
2. Who Are Humans? (vs. 3-8)
”When I look/consider your heavens”
”The ‘I’ of this psalm is what makes us aware that the general question, what is a human being? Is fundamentally a question, What am I? What possible meaning and significance can I or any other human being have in the midst of this cosmos that seems to have no end in time or space? (Whether that is a correct scientific perception does not matter. It is how I feel it, and so do you.) To be human is to experience a kind of fundamental anxiety in the face of the universe. That is something that distinguishes human beings from other sensate beings.” Patrick Miller, What Is a Human Being? In What About the Soul?
A. Feeling Unimportant (v. 3)
Overwhelmed, Insignificant, Small
“Sometimes I look above me and stars are shining and I feel so small. How could the God of heaven and all creation know I’m here at all? Then in the silence He whispers my child I created you too. And your my most precious creation. I even gave my Son for you.” Steven Curtis Chapman
B. The Most Important question you can ask and have answered (v. 4)
Job 7:17-18
“I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow, a wave tossed in the ocean, a vapor in the wind…” Casting Crowns
C. Creation explained (vs. 5-8)
God cares for us simply because we are humans.
In a prayer Jeremiah says:
“O LORD, you know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance take me not away; know that for your sake I bear reproach.” - Jeremiah 15:15
Even in the sciences we find that life is so fine tuned for human existence it points us back to our significance.
- A little lower than the angels
- The image of God
Mark 12:13-15
- Dominion over the other parts of creation
Genesis 1:26-28
Genesis 2:19-20
1. We seem insignificant in comparison to the cosmos or the rest of creation
2. We have this special attention from the Creator
3. God enters His creation in human form.
3. The NAME Revisited (v. 9)
Hebrews 2:6-9
A. Christ became a human being in every way. We already had a place of dominion. Now by the Son of God becoming human he has elevated humanity.
B. By Becoming Human Christ Conquered the Curse
C. We Have So Much to Celebrate!
Reflection:
1. In days like we live in have you sensed the fact that the LORD is in control?
2. What is out of control in your life right now that you need to entrust to Jesus?
3. Have you placed your trust in that completed work of Jesus Christ the God-man?
